In this professional learning workshop, we evaluate phenomenon-focused activities aligned to the Next Generation Science Standards and similar K-12 Framework-based three-dimensional (3D) standards.
We begin by discussing how 3D content standards change what student proficiency means. We will review phenomenon characteristics and criteria, as well as the structure, progressions, and student-centered intent of 3D standards. We will introduce proficiency goals as a tool for understanding interconnections among the three core dimensions of a standard.
You will learn how to map a phenomenon to a standard's proficiency goals and then use this strategy to select workable phenomena for your lessons. You will evaluate example curricular resources, looking for standards-aligned, phenomenon-focused, student-centered activities. And you will explore modifying these lessons to ensure agreement among the standards, the phenomenon, and the student tasks. You will evaluate a resource of your choosing and map it to a common learning model (e.g., 5E). In the end, you will have a process for evaluating and adjusting lessons so that they will work for you. And you will take home an adjusted lesson that lets your students address a real-world example using actual science practices and ways of thinking.
